Alan Vrooman ’50, ’52 (Hon.),
Woodbridge Odlin Professor of English, Emeritus
Giving Back, Once More, to a Place He Loves
Emeritus English instructor Alan Vrooman ’50, ’52 (Hon.) long ago provided for Exeter in his will. Recently, however, he decided to make the gift more immediate by converting it from a bequest intention to a Charitable Gift Annuity. “I did it,” says Alan, referring to the annuity, “because I love the school and wanted to support it, and I figured it was best to give now rather than after my demise. Other than my family, the things that mean the most to me in life are my education at Princeton and my 41 years of teaching at Exeter.”
Alan’s annuity will create a steady and secure income stream for him and his wife, Dorothy, during their lifetimes, and it has also permitted the couple to take a significant tax deduction. Upon their deaths, the corpus of the annuity, which has been invested with the Academy’s endowment, will be used to establish the Alan H. Vrooman Scholarship Fund at Phillips Exeter Academy, which will provide financial aid to students who could not otherwise afford to attend. Vrooman emphasizes that the importance of scholarships at Exeter cannot be overstated in that they bring to the Academy students from all backgrounds and thus help maintain the spirit of meritocracy upon which Exeter was founded so many years ago.
