Peyton Weary, M.D. ’48 and Wife Janet
Creating an Annuity in the Present Helps Support Exeter’s Future
After a life spent distinguishing himself in medicine and academia, Peyton Weary, M.D. ’48 retired five years ago from the University of Virginia’s Department of Dermatology. He has since immersed himself in environmental issues and education to the extent that, as Peyton says, “I’ll soon need to go back to work in order to have more free time.” Busy as Peyton and his wife, Janet, remain, they have been able to give some thought to their personal philanthropy. “We’ve always felt that it’s important to give back to our alma maters,” says Peyton. “I set up an IRA a number of years ago for that purpose, but as I recently reviewed our investments, it seemed to me that a CGA made a great deal of sense given our ages and philanthropic goals.”
Based on this assessment, Peyton and Janet proceeded to establish a charitable gift annuity at Exeter with the Academy as ultimate beneficiary. The corpus of their gift will eventually support environmental programs and groups at Exeter. “Establishing the annuity has allowed us to be more directive in what our money will ultimately be used for at the Academy, while also giving us a tax deduction and a great return on our investment in the present, some of which is tax-free.”
So why is Exeter worth the Wearys’ support? “Because,” says Peyton, “the values I developed there have been with me ever since. The independence fostered in that kind of environment, the high ethical and moral standards that are imparted, the spirit of equalitythese are so important to today’s leaders and professionals, and they must be maintained for those to come.”
