Guy Paschal '51
Class of 1951 Faculty Fund

Thanks to the generosity of Guy and Helen Paschal and 99.8 percent of The Class of 1951, the "boys of ’51" had much to celebrate last May, including a new record for the largest single class gift in Exeter history— $4,133,409. As a major gift chair for his 50th reunion, Guy was at the forefront of this incredible fund-raising effort. To set an example for his class, Guy stepped up to the plate and established a charitable remainder unitrust. To create the trust, Guy and Helen used highly appreciated securities with a low-cost basis. According to Guy, the benefits of such a planned gift are many. "It allowed us to avoid the capital gains tax while also permitting us to take a charitable deduction based on the appreciated value of the securities, with an appropriate discount using actuarial calculations," he explains. The trust will pay income to Guy and Helen during their lives. At the time of the death of the second beneficiary, the principal amount will go to Phillips Exeter Academy.

Guy was able to designate his trust so that the majority of his gift will eventually go to the Class of 1951 Faculty Fund. Of the charitable remainder unitrust he and Helen established, Guy says, "I hadn’t originally planned to do what I did. But to encourage others to go to the limits of their generosity, I had to give generously myself."
