Robert E. Charlesworth '39
A flip trust allowed me to honor my Exeter teachers and address my financial needs in ways I never thought possible…
Exeter teachers are still looking over my shoulder today, encouraging, inspiring, and prodding, when necessary!" says Robert E. "Sandy" Charlesworth ’39. "They include Dr. Kirtland, who missed me with that blackboard eraser upon more than one occasion, Drs. Leonard and DeLancey, and a young instructor named Alan Vrooman. Dr. Perry and Dean Kerr still represent for me standards of trust and integrity gently blended with encouragement and good humor. Thinking of them, I am particularly proud to be a member of the Heritage Circle."
Sandy made his gift to the Academy through a flip trust, which converted real estate into an income-producing trust for Sandy and his wife, Ann, during their lifetimes. After their deaths, the trust will dissolve and the principal will go to Exeter. The trust creates a significant tax deduction and removes the asset from estate consideration; most important, the trust has allowed Sandy to achieve his goal of making a major philanthropic commitment to Exeter.
